History

The Spanish Pronunciation Contest has been going on in Wisconsin for more than twenty years. The purpose of the contest is to celebrate and promote the study of the Spanish language. An open, state-wide contest, it gives Spanish great exposure and allows students to earn medals for skills they work hard to develop all year long. The AATSP-WI (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese-Wisconsin Chapter) also sponsors the National Spanish Exam, but the Pronunciation Contest highlights the oral communication skills that students develop in addition to general knowledge of the language.

Like forensics, there are a variety of categories, but they are all in Spanish. Students prepare and present memorized poems, narrations and short theatre scenes. There are also two categories to demonstrate their skills on-the-spot: an unprepared reading selection and a conversation. Students as young as second grade participate at the FLES level. This level is for students who study Spanish at the elementary level. Higher levels include I,II, III, IV and V, which correspond to the level they are studying in school. We even offer two special categories for bilingual students!

The AATSP-WI offers scholarships of $100 for high school seniors who participate in the contest and earn a 1st place ranking at the State Contest. We are always looking for ways to involve more schools and more students and to encourage long-term language learning.
Our website lists all the selections so that any school from around the state can view the topics from year to year. The AATSP works on networking all the interested teachers and schools in the state so that everyone may receive the latest information.
